Order dated 27th April 2010 Order dated 2nd February 2011

The first meeting of the National Implementation Committee (NIC) chaired by Hon’ble Minister of Finance Shri Pranab Mukherjee, was held on 5th May, 2010.

The NIC observed that the Tagore Centenary Celebrations in 1961 established major ‘cultural spaces’ in India in the form of Bhavans, Sadans, Rangashalas etc. Publication of a compendium of Tagore’s literature and a documentary film by Satyajit Ray were other major commemorative projects. In the meeting, NIC unanimously decided that while performances, events and celebrations could form part of the 150th Birth Anniversary, the creation of enduring tangible cultural assets should be the central focus.

In addition, Tagore’s international contacts and visits as well as his identity as the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize are still remembered in several parts of the world. Also his message of universal brotherhood should be leveraged as part of cultural diplomacy. Keeping these in view, a specific set of initiatives needs to be formulated so that 150th Birth Anniversary is celebrated in a befitting manner.
