Tagore National Fellowship for Cultural Research

As actual selection was made during Tagore's 150 year's celebrations (in May 2010), the Ministry of Culture approved renaming of the Scheme as Tagore National Fellowship and issued an extended version of the scheme on 7th May, 2011.

The objective of the Scheme is to invigorate and revitalise various cultural institutions which have vast treasures in the form of manuscripts, documents, artifacts, antiquities and paintings. The purpose is to encourage serious researches in the cultural resources of these institutions. Schemes like this would

encourage research, scholarship and analysis of the objects that are not usually available for public viewing or use. Museums, for instance, can hardly display more than a small percentage of their entire holdings.

The scheme is open to both Indian nationals and foreign citizens. Under the Scheme, scholars are invited to devote 2 years to pursue research in one or more of these Cultural Institutions, so as to produce a valuable work based on the resources available in the Institutions and make it known to the wider public.

The scheme, modified in April 2011, envisages two categories of awards. The first category is of 'Tagore National Fellows' where an honorarium of Rs. 80,000/- per month will be paid and up to 15 awards will be given in a year. The second category will be of 'Tagore Research Scholars' to be paid monthly honorarium of Rs. 50,000/- and under this category up to 25 awards will be given in a year.

While the existing scheme covers only 17 institutions under the Ministry of Culture (MoC), including one supported by it, the modified scheme will cover 29 MoC institutions, including all the three National Akademies and seven Zonal Cultural Centres.

A National Selection Committee (NSC), comprising of eminent scholars in different cultural fields, has been set up to select scholars and projects under the Scheme. Eight non-MoC institutions are also covered under the scheme.

The scheme, mode of application and other relevant details are available on the website of the
Ministry: Click here to visit the Website.
